Psalm 119:41-48

October 30, 2022

Psalm 119:41-48, ESV
Waw Let your steadfast love come to me, O LORD, your salvation according to your promise;. then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me, for I trust in your word. And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your rules.

I will keep your law continually, forever and ever, and I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts. I will also speak of your testimonies before kings and shall not be put to shame, for I find my delight in your commandments, which I love. I will lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes.

Psalm 119:41-48, JN paraphrase
The answers to my life’s questions all lie within Your promises, but it is my responsibility to search them out. All from the taunts of an unbeliever to Satan’s jibe at Eve, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” The answer is there for me to search out and apply to my life. As are all other questions pertaining to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Psalm 18:30-42

October 29, 2022

Psalm 18:30-42, ESV
This God —his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?— the God who equipped me with strength and made my way blameless. He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights. He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supported me, and your gentleness made me great. You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip. I pursued my enemies and overtook them, and did not turn back till they were consumed. I thrust them through, so that they were not able to strength ; they fell under my feet. For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me. You made my enemies turn their backs to me, and those who hated me I destroyed. They cried for help, but there was none to save; they cried to the LORD, but he did not answer them. I beat them fine as dust before the wind; I cast them out like the mire of the streets.

Psalm 18:30-42, JN paraphrase
This God is perfect as His Word proves. He provides a shield for those seeing refuge, He is the ROCK, the equipping God Who provides strength and directs me in the way to go. He gives me fleet and stable feet, trains me for His war, with bronze bending arms. I am protected by His shield, the all powerful shield of salvation and the support of His gentle right hand.

You enabled me to pursue my enemies until they were consumed; the strength to thrust them through; they fell under my feet. I destroyed my enemies, they cried for help but You did not answer. They became as filth in the streets. You overcame.

Psalm 18:25-29

October 28, 2022

Psalm 18:25-29, ESV
With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; with the purified you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. For you save a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down. For it is you who light my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness. For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall.

Psalm 18:25-29, JN paraphrase
Lord, a situation has evolved among members of our extended families in which individuals are tearing at each other in ways that lack humility, purity and adherence to Your directive to love one another. We come to You seeking Your guidance as Your servants to bring peace and light to some very troubled family members.

Psalm 18:15-24

October 27, 2022

Psalm 18:15-24, ESV
Then the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were laid bare at your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of your nostrils. He sent from on high, he took me; he drew me out of many waters. He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me, for they were too mighty for me. They confronted me in the day of my calamity, but the LORD was my support.

He brought me out into a broad place; he rescued me, because he delighted in me. The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. For all his rules were before me, and his statutes I did not put away from me. I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from my guilt. So the LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

Psalm 18:15-24, JN paraphrase
You, oh LORD, God, the Almighty, rescued from my enemy and saved me from those who hated Your Work in me.

You rescued me because You were delighted in me. My righteousness; my cleanness was not my doing, but Your doing in bringing me to Your Ways, Your rules, Your statutes; all have been kept before me to guide me according to Your Word.

Psalm 17:1-15

October 24, 2022

Psalm 17:1-15, ESV
A Prayer of David. Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit! From your presence let my vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right! You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress. With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.

I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me; hear my words. Wondrously show your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand. Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings, from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who surround me. They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they speak arrogantly. They have now surrounded our steps; they set their eyes to cast us to the ground.

He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush. Arise, O LORD! Confront him, subdue him! Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword, from men by your hand, O LORD, from men of the world whose portion is in this life. You fill their womb with treasure; they are satisfied with children, and they leave their abundance to their infants. As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with your likeness.

Psalm 17:1-15, JN paraphrase
LORD, hear me as one who has been tried and tested by You. I have been vindicated by Your close examination that I speak as a man without deceit. My feet have not slipped from the path ordained by You.

Now LORD, God, the Almighty, answer my call, demonstrate Your steadfast love for those who seek your Face. Support me as the apple of Your eye, as one hidden in the shadow of Your wings. The wicked have attempted to assault me aided by the desperate enemies who seek to turn You against me. They are identified by their haughty and arrogant demeanor and their compulsion to destroy me and mine on Your eyes.

O, LORD, save me and mine from those whose only portion is in this life; they have no vision of the life to come in Your presence. They have no sense of the joy to come when I behold Your Face, and the righteousness that emanates from You.

Psalm 119:33-40

October 23, 2022

Psalm 119:33-40, ESV
He Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.
Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain! Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. Confirm to your servant your promise, that you may be feared. Turn away the reproach that I dread, for your rules are good. Behold, I long for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life!

Psalm 119:33-40, JN paraphrase
Ish Elohim, as usual, gets it right straight out of the blocks. The SOURCE OF ALL GOODNESS IS THE LORD, GOD, THE ALMIGHTY and the HOLY WORD. He then delineates the necessary steps to reap the benefits of the transformation.\

  1. Turn my heart from selfish gain to His testimonies.
  2. Turn my sight from worthless things to life in His ways.
  3. The fear of the LORD, God, the Almighty is a result of the confirmation of His promises.
  4. I no longer need to dread anything in life, for His rules are ‘good.
  5. I am transformed by a longing for obedience to the Word of the LORD, for I receive life through the righteousness of the LORD, God, the Almighty.

Psalm 16:1-11

October 21, 2022

Psalm 16:1-11, ESV
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 16:1-11, JN paraphrase
LORD, You are my refuge, the source of all that is good in me. My examples are your saints; those who have gone before me and are my treasured examples. All in contrast to those who chase other gods and whom I must not follow.

You are my example for You provide pure leadership, without error or miss-step. Therefore, I will not be shaken.

The gladness of my heart, the rejoicing of my being is evident to all. Your path is one of life, joy, never ending pleasure.

Psalm 15:1-5

October 19, 2022

Psalm 15:1-5, ESV
A Psalm of David.
O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill? He who walks blamelessly and does what is right and speaks truth in his heart; who does not slander with his tongue and does no evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend; in whose eyes a vile person is despised, but who honors those who fear the LORD; who swears to his own hurt and does not change; who does not put out his money at interest and does not take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved.

Psalm 15:1-5, JN paraphrase
"O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill?"

  1. A blameless walker.
  2. A rightful doer.
  3. A truth speaker and liver.
  4. Defends a friend against reproach.
  5. Does not honor the vile doer.
  6. Gives honor to those who fear the LORD.
  7. Who not defend his actions when it might be to his benefit to do otherwise.
  8. Who does not loan for the sake of interest received.
  9. Who refuses bribes to the determent of the innocent.

Hmmm, sounds to me like a description of someone whose life has been transformed by the sacrifice of the LORD Jesus the Christ and is living a life of obedience to the 10 Commandments as a result.

Psalm 119:25-32

October 17, 2022

Psalm 119:25-32, ESV
Daleth My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word! When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes! Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works.

My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word! Put false ways far from me and graciously teach me your law!

I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I set your rules before me. I cling to your testimonies, O LORD; let me not be put to shame! I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!

Psalm 119:25-32, JN paraphrase
Ish Elohim, (the man of God, my name for the author of the 119th Psalm) has a passion for using the language of this Psalm to nail his relationship with the LORD, God, the Almighty. Look at that last paragraph. He recognizes the essential steps as he declares the necessity for adsorbing the Word of the LORD, of avoiding any action or statement that would be contrary to his witness, and very importantly, that the strength to walk this path depends upon strength from the LORD. Oh, that my prayer would be likewise.

Psalm 14:1-7

October 16, 2022

Psalm 14:1-7, ESV
To the choirmaster. Of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good. The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.

Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD? There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous.

You would shame the plans of the poor, but the LORD is his refuge. Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the LORD restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

Psalm 14:1-7, JN paraphrase
The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” How long ago was this precious Psalm written? 2500 +/- years ago? And it nails our society and moral condition precisely? Read carefully and meditatively. Do you hear the national news sources? It does not matter, they are all reporting, “ They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.”

But the LORD, God, the Almighty is our refuge. Our prayer is “Come, Lord Jesus, come.” And He is! Soon! For His people!

Psalm 13:1-6

October 13, 2022

Psalm 13:1-6, ESV
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
Consider and answer me, O LORD my God; light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death, lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,” lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.

But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Psalm 13:1-6, JN paraphrase
Haven’t we all be through this? When our self-pity exceeds our good sense; when Satan sticks a knife in our ego and twists?

But the lesson David shares with us is to steadfastly dwell on the power of His word and trust in the permanence of His word.

And He does enjoy the prayers and songs of His saints.

Psalm 119:17-24

October 09, 2022

Psalm 119:17-24, ESV
Gimel Deal bountifully with your servant, that I may live and keep your word. Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. I am a sojourner on the earth; hide not your commandments from me! My soul is consumed with longing for your rules at all times. You rebuke the insolent, accursed ones, who wander from your commandments. Take away from me scorn and contempt, for I have kept your testimonies. Even though princes sit plotting against me, your servant will meditate on your statutes. Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors.

Psalm 119:17-24, JN paraphrase
What does it mean to deal bountifully with me so I can keep the Word of the LORD, God, the Almighty?

  1. He must open my eyes to the beauty of the Word.
  2. He must remove the curse of a sojourner
  3. He must not hide His commandments from me
  4. He must ignite the longing for His rules
  5. He must rebuke the insolent, the accursed ones, the wanders from His commandments.
  6. He must take away scorn and contempt from me.
  7. He must protect me from authorities who plot my ruin
  8. And the result will be that I meditate on your statutes, they are my delight and counselors.
  9. Who does the necessary steps? He does, the LORD, God, the Almighty does. Not Johnny.

HALLELUJAH, PRAISE THE LORD, GOD, THE ALMIGHTY.
