To Be Like Jesus

O, to be like Thee!

1 Peter 1:13-16 NRSV
Therefore, prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed.
Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance.
Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct; for it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

To be holy is to be transformed into Christ’s image. Holiness incarnated looks like Christ . . . To be holy in our conduct, then, is to embody Christ’s love in whatever situation we find ourselves. Holiness can be astringent in the presence of sin, and its cleansing can burn deeply like fire. Holiness, though, will never harm us or others. Like Christ, the holy person will lovingly welcome fellow strugglers and know how to help them move beyond their sin.
(Commentary on 1 Peter 1:15 from the Renovare Spiritual Formation Bible)

O, TO BE LIKE THEE
Thomas O Chisholm

O, to be like Thee! Blessed Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

O, to be like Thee! Full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind;
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wandering sinner to find.

O, to be like Thee! Lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient, and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer others to save.

O, to be like Thee! Lord, I am coming
Now to receive the anointing divine;
All that I am and have I am bringing;
Lord, from this moment all shall be Thine.

O, to be like Thee! While I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love.
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and heaven above.

O, to be like Thee! O, to be like Thee!
Blessed Redeemer, pure as Thou art!
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness,
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
