Joshua 24:14-18 NKJV
Now therefore revere the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt and serve the Lord. Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods; for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight. He protected us along all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed; and the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore, we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”
Ancient treaties had commands, and so it was with you, O Lord.
You made a treaty – an agreement – a sacred covenant with ancient Israel, that you would be their God and they would be your people. Your basic commands were fidelity and faithfulness.
“Put away the gods that your ancestors served in Egypt; do not turn your eyes to anyone else! Choose your allegiance – either the false gods from your past or Me.”
What an easy choice, O Lord! You had proven your love and faithfulness to them in great displays of power and glory. The people saw these things and they declared:
“Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods.”
But they were not faithful to you. They did forsake you, O Lord. And so have we, your people, today. And so have I.
You call your people in every age to choose whom they will worship; either You or the things of the world around them. Too often we choose the world around us.
Forgive us, merciful Lord.
By your Spirit, give us the ability to repent. Give us the desire to repent. And give us, O Lord, the same heart as your ancient servant Joshua, when he said, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
May that be true of our household as well.
Amen.
Once to Every Man and Nation
James Russell Lowell
Once to every man and nation comes the moment to decide, in the strife of truth with falsehood, for the good or evil side. Some great cause, some great decision, offering each the bloom or blight, and the choice goes by forever twixt that darkness and that light.
By the light of burning martyrs, Christ, Thy bleeding feet we track; toiling up new Calvaries ever, with the cross that turns not back. New occasions teach new duties; ancient values test our youth. They must upward still and onward, who would keep abreast of truth.
