God our Provider
1 Kings 17:8-16 NRSV
Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” So, he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.” As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. For thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied, and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.” She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.
She continued to take out of her jar and out of her bottle the quantity of meal and oil requisite for the consumption of her household; and without carefully estimating what was left, she went with confidence each time for a supply and was never disappointed. This miracle was very like that wrought by Jesus at the
marriage at Cana in Galilee: as the servants drew the water out of the pots, they found it turned into wine; and thus they continued to draw wine from the water-pots till the guests had been sufficiently supplied. (Adam Clarke)[1]
God our Father, faithful provider of all our needs, You test our faith through times of want and lack. You test your prophets through circumstances of dependance on others for their supply. You test your servants through calls to give beyond their resources, trusting you to be their Source. In all of life You call us all to “walk by faith and not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).
Grant that we may be joyful as we rest in your promises of faithful provision. Grant that we may be faithful sharers of all that we have, knowing that in You we have an abundant supply. Knowing that you are the God of abundant meal and oil in Zarephath, and of the best wine in Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-10), may we be obedient givers like the widow of Zarephath, and give all that we have like the widow that Jesus praised (Mark 12:42-44). As you have shown infinite love to us, may we in our limited ways show love to everyone around us, to the praise and honor of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.

If you have found this meditation helpful, take a moment and give thanks to God. Then share what you learned with a friend. This is how the grace of God spreads (2 Corinthians 4.15).
