The Life of Ever-Larger Limits

Which promises guide your life each day?

...by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

- 2 Peter 1.4

For those who are bound by place and time are finite; but the eternal beatitude is infinite. Therefore those who participate in the eternal and infinite beatitude will be encompassed neither by place nor time.

   - Eriugena, Periphyseon, Irish, 9th century

We all live for promises. Everything we do is motivated by promise – something hoped for, something greatly desired.

We get out of bed each day because we believe the activities of the day hold more promise for a meaningful and happy life than just lying around under the covers all day.

We choose our jobs because they promise fulfillment, reward, and satisfaction.

Everything we do is motivated by promise; the bigger and more desirable the promise, the more we apply ourselves to realizing it.

How about this for a promise: You can partake of God’s own being; you can participate in God!

Don’t like being hedged in by the limitations of place and time? Engage in God, enter into Him, partake of Him and you will know eternal glory, unbounded joy, spiritually transforming power, and wholesome pleasure like nothing else can give.

The promises of God’s covenant are precious and very great. When these become the orienting perspective for our lives, there will be no limit to what we can enjoy of the presence of God and participation in Him.

Focus on God’s promises, not the puny offerings of the mundane world; live toward the exceeding great and precious limits of hope God holds out for you, and you’ll rise above every constraint of time and space to know life on a higher plane.

This is for real; this is not just theological speculation. God wants us to get out of ourselves, out of our world, and into Him, and His precious and very great promises are just the ticket we need.

Oh, but, do you know what those promises are, and how to lay hold on them?

Psalm 105.8-11 (Warrington: “Give to Our God Immortal Praise”)
He will His covenant faithfully guard – His oath, the promise of His Word.
That which He to our fathers swore, He will perform forevermore!

Teach me Your promises, Lord, and then teach me how to live toward them!
