Psalm 119:81-88

June 26, 2022

Kaph My soul longs for your salvation; I hope in your word. My eyes long for your promise; I ask, “When will you comfort me?” For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke, yet I have not forgotten your statutes.

How long must your servant endure? When will you judge those who persecute me?

The insolent have dug pitfalls for me; they do not live according to your law. All your commandments are sure; they persecute me with falsehood; help me! They have almost made an end of me on earth, but I have not forsaken your precepts.

In your steadfast love give me life, that I may keep the testimonies of your mouth.

How timely! I’m dealing with a software problem where my only access to resolution is to work through a CS rep. Generally, a not too unpleasant experience, but in this case the representative’s AI program does not provide for the circumstances I’m dealing with. The hapless rep gets to this point and is lost and has no way of booting me to a higher authority.

But I find comfort in Ish Elohim’s faith in the LORD, God, the Almighty’s willingness to provide a solution to his problem. I must take heart, continue to hold my problem before the LORD and proceed.

1 Samuel 10:4-7

June 25, 2022

Then you shall go on from there farther and come to the oak of Tabor. Three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. And they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall accept from their hand.

After that you shall come to Gibeath-elohim, where there is a garrison of the Philistines. And there, as soon as you come to the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying. Then the Spirit of the LORD will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man.

Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you.

This last sentence is extremely important in our study of the work of the Holy Spirit. It is an indicator that the Holy Spirit’s work will always be accompanied by verifyiable transformation. Saul was consumed by shyness. He went and hid the luggage after his anointing. Here he is turned into another man by the Work of the Spirit. It is so by all who are called by the Holy Spirit. Likewise we should be extremely cautious about claiming that we have the Word of the LORD. Best oft to let another recognize the transformation.

Judges 6:34 But the Spirit of the LORD clothed Gideon, and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him.

Judges 11:29 Then the Spirit of the LORD was upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh and passed on to Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he passed on to the Ammonites.

Judges 13:25 And the Spirit of the LORD began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

Judges 14:6 Then the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and although he had nothing in his hand, he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

Judges 14:19 And the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck down thirty men of the town and took their spoil and gave the garments to those who had told the riddle. In hot anger he went back to his father's house.

Judges 15:14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting to meet him. Then the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him, and the ropes that were on his arms became as flax that has caught fire, and his bonds melted off his hands.

Judges 6:34 (Gideon) through Judges 15:14 (Samson) of instances where the Spirit came upon an Israelite to save them from an aggressor. Are we in any better shape today? Do we anticipate to be led by the Holy Spirit as we work our way through a problem?

Judges 3:7-11

June 23, 2022

And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asheroth. Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia. And the people of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

But when the people of Israel cried out to the LORD, the LORD raised up a deliverer for the people of Israel, who saved them, Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. The Spirit of the LORD was upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the LORD gave Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. And his hand prevailed over Cushan-rishathaim.

So the land had rest forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

A pattern that develops throughout Judges. The Israelites forget the Lord, God, the Almighty and serve other gods. Eventually they realize the penalty that they are paying for their heresy and cry out to the LORD. He, in His great love for them, sends the Holy Spirit to lead a judge in returning the nation of Israel to Him in obedience to His commandments. Eventually to be repeated.

Numbers 27:15-23

June 22, 2022

Moses spoke to the LORD, saying, “Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man lead them out and bring them in, that the congregation of the LORD may not be as sheep that have no shepherd.”

So the LORD said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him. Make him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall commission him in their sight. You shall invest him with some of your authority, that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey. And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of t’he Urim before the LORD. At his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel with him, the whole congregation.”

And Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, and he laid his hands on him and commissioned him as the LORD directed through Moses.

I saw this passage as I read through it and let it soak in, as an example of the LORD, God, the Almighty and Moses working as a team through the Holy Spirit to ensure that Moses' successor is properly prepared and equipped for his responsibilities. I do catch a sense of the teamwork between Moses and the LORD. So important that we listen to His direction.

I am unclear whether the ‘laying on of hands’ was an action by Moses or by Eleazar. It is an important of the “Change of Command” ceremony, but I do not distinctly remember it being part of the installation of a new pastor. My sense is that if it is significant, it should be observed. A question to be prayerfully addressed.

When Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not go, as at other times, to look for omens, but set his face toward the wilderness. And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe. And the Spirit of God came upon him, and he took up his discourse and said, “The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor, the oracle of the man whose eye is opened, the oracle of him who hears the words of God, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down with his eyes uncovered: How lovely are your tents, O Jacob, your encampments, O Israel!

And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he struck his hands together. And Balak said to Balaam, “I called you to curse my enemies, and behold, you have blessed them these three times. Therefore now flee to your own place. I said, ‘I will certainly honor you,’ but the LORD has held you back from honor.” And Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not tell your messengers whom you sent to me, ‘If Balak should give me his house full of silver and gold, I would not be able to go beyond the word of the LORD, to do either good or bad of my own will. What the LORD speaks, that will I speak’? And now, behold, I am going to my people. Come, I will let you know what this people will do to your people in the latter days.”

A most interesting passage for we find the Holy Spirit descending upon someone who was not of the Chosen people, but definitely a heathen. Balaam was not a child of God. Would we expect the same thing today? I don’t think so; we almost tend to think of the Holy Spirit as our personal possession.

Numbers 11:27-29

And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” And Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, “My lord Moses, stop them.” But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!”

Why did Joshua want to stop Eldad and Medad from prophesying? A youthful jealousy on his part that they weren't quite playing the game according to the rules? I’ve been aware of this passage coming up for the last 2-3 weeks and the Spirit has not revealed the barest suggestion. But I’m in a quandary for I am convinced that there is not an unnecessary word in the Holy Scriptures. However, that does not mean that I am able to interpret every word of Scripture. Maybe that’s the lesson. It’s addressed to my pride in thinking that I am an authority in the interpretation of Scripture. No! I have to be willing to turn to others for assistance in understanding the Word of God.

Psalm 119:73-80

June 19, 2022

YODH Your hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn your commandments. Those who fear you shall see me and rejoice, because I have hoped in your word. I know, O LORD, that your rules are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.

Let your steadfast love comfort me according to your promise to your servant. Let your mercy come to me, that I may live; for your law is my delight. Let the insolent be put to shame, because they have wronged me with falsehood; as for me, I will meditate on your precepts. Let those who fear you turn to me, that they may know your testimonies.

May my heart be blameless in your statutes, that I may not be put to shame!

Ish Elohim (the man of God), I suspect loves to start a stanza with an avowal that He needs to grow in understanding and and appreciation for the commandments of the LORD, God, the Almighty. Certainly a topic worth exploring in the future. YODH is certainly no exception. Every sentence is a plea for growth in understanding.

Numbers 11:24-30

June 18, 2022

So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD. And he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tent. Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it.

Now two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”

And Joshua the son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, “My lord Moses, stop them.” But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!” And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

Very interesting that the power of the Spirit is bestowed for a specific purpose, and included two elders who did not respond to the direction to join the others. The LORD knew exactly the manpower required to supervise the enormous quantity of quail about to descend on the camp. Never before, never after.

Aren’t we sent out today for a specific mission? Go, take my name to a people and tell them that Jesus saves? And shouldn’t we be conscious of that specific calling? John Chau sensed that call to an island in the Bay of Bengal, a totally un-reached people group. He prepared for nine years, but was martyred within minutes of stepping ashore. The story is not finished.

And I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you may not bear it yourself alone.

Our first indication that the Holy Spirit can be transferred from one believer to another. We will see later where the laying on of hands had its beginning early in the faith of the Israelites. Here the transfer is effected by the LORD, God, the Almighty. I don’t recall further instances in the OT but we shall see as this study progresses.

Exodus 31:2-11

June 16, 2022

The LORD said to Moses, “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft.

And behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, and the ark of the testimony, and the mercy seat that is on it, and all the furnishings of the tent, the table and its utensils, and the pure lamp-stand with all its utensils, and the altar of incense, and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, and the finely worked garments, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, for their service as priests, and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense for the Holy Place. According to all that I have commanded you, they shall do.”

A strong argument, especially when Exodus 35:30-35 is included, that the arts are at their foundation, a work of the LORD, God, the Almighty. Study that list, very impressive at its span of materials and techniques. P oint it out to some of your artistic but atheistic friends. That should start a spirited conversation.

As I write, I’m looking at a painting, “In Ruin”, by Bob Todd, a study from within the ruin of a Celtic monastery towards a set of great crosses. I think he would have been shocked to learn that I find frequent inspiration, bordering on sermons, from his painting s that decorate the walls of my work space.

Genesis 41:37-42

This proposal pleased Pharaoh and all his servants. And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?” Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has shown you all this, there is none so discerning and wise as you are. You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command. Only as regards the throne will I be greater than you.” And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.” Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph's hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck.

What was it that so astounded Pharaoh and his staff? The application of common sense to a problem. Where did it come from? The Spirit of God indwelling within Joseph. It is evident from the history of Joseph that he was a man who was accustomed to turning to the LORD when faced with a challenging question.

Is it my practice? To turn to the LORD for guidance for a somewhat routine task? Well no, but I’m learning. John-don’t wait until you’ve made a through bollix of the matter. Go to the Holy Spirit in meekness and request His guidance from the beginning.
