Revivals and Persecution

Persecution often accompanies times of revival.

Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 2 Timothy 3.12

You probably don’t associate persecution with revivals. Instead, we are more inclined to associate revivals with packed churches, people taking God’s Word more seriously, prayer meetings springing up, and Christians passionately working to reform their society.

But we have an adversary who loathes these very things and will use anything and everything within His power to resist, deter, or halt any budding revival. And with our society drifting further from the Lord and from His Word, the devil’s resistance will more than likely increase.

In times past, several elements in Western society helped pave the way for revivals to occur – an affirmation of absolute truth, a respect for the Bible even if its inerrancy was in question, a general knowledge of basic Christian tenets, and a culture steeped in Biblical roots.

These have provided a bulwark against many of Satan’s attacks. But as the vestiges of these redoubts have been dismantled, we may assume Satan will redouble his efforts. Going forward in America, future revivals may not only be deterred, but openly attacked.

Regardless, we take heart because Jesus is the one to Whom “all authority” has been given (Matt. 28.18-20). But we do well to equip ourselves for the conflict ahead through God’s Word and prayer.

For who is God, except the LORD?
And who is a rock, except our God?
It is God who arms me with strength,
And makes my way perfect.
He makes my feet like the feet of deer,
And sets me on my high places.
He teaches my hands to make war,
So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. Psalm 18.31-35
