Kingdom Keepers

Be careful you're not barring entrance to the Kingdom.

Healthy, Growing Churches (2)

“But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever.’”
Daniel 7.18

Scholia on Daniel 7.17
Hipploytus (fl. 222-245)
“The indissoluble and everlasting kingdom of the saints may be brought to view and the heavenly King manifested to all, no longer in figure, like one seen in vision or revealed in a pillar of cloud on the top of a mountain but amid the powers and armies of angels, as God incarnate and man, Son of God and Son of man—coming from heaven as the world’s judge.”

Hippolytus was looking to the end of time and the coming judgment of the Lord, when the saints shall finally enter the Kingdom in its fullness. But Daniel had said that the Lord would establish His Kingdom during the days of the Roman Empire (Dan. 2.4, 45), and Daniel 7 restates and confirms this. Jesus declared He had come to bring the Kingdom near, even into our midst. The Kingdom has been advancing in righteousness, peace, and joy in the Spirit ever since then (Rom. 14.17, 18; Is. 9.6, 7). But are the pastors of our churches leading saints into the Kingdom, and equipping them forKingdom life and growth – Kingdom keepers? Or are they, if only by indifference or neglect or wrong priorities, barring the way to the Kingdom, even failing to lay hold on and keep it themselves (cf. Matt. 23.13). Seeking the Kingdom is to be the first and overarching priority of every true saint (Matt. 6.33). Why would the Son of Man give us His Kingdom, if He did not intend us to enjoy and flourish in it, and to advance it, like a growing stone, through every aspect of life in our community? Will it happen that, when the Kingdom finally does come in its fullness, the saints entrusted to our care will neither recognize nor be fitted for it?

How would you describe the focus on the Kingdom of God, and on seeking that Kingdom, in your church?
