The Ministry of Proclaiming

We are all witnesses for Christ.

Preach the word! Be ready in season andout of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 2 Timothy 4.2

Life Together
Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945)
“What we are concerned with here is the free communication of the Word from person to person, not by the ordained ministry which is bound to a particular office, time, and place. We are thinking of that unique situation in which one person bears witness in human words to another person, bespeaking the whole consolation of God, the admonition, the kindness, and the severity of God. The speaking of that Word is beset with infinite perils.”

In this age of the Holy Spirit, all believers are called to minister the Word of God – to one another and to the world around. We must learn to speak the truth in love, to let our words be informed and shaped by the Word of God itself, so that we speak the words He might in any situation. This is a primary component of Personal Mission Field living. But it doesn’t come naturally or easily; we must be equipped for this work of ministry, as for all others (Eph. 4.11, 12). Pastors and teachers must work hard to encourage this on the part of church members, teaching them to become immersed in the Word of God and modeling the kind of speech that we long for them to enjoy and share with one another. We’re all called to proclaim the grace of Jesus, and the sooner we get started, the sooner the blessings of God will flow to others.

How much do you know about the Bible reading practices of the members of your church? Do you hear in their conversation a reflection of the words of Scripture?
