And Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and paid homage. And David said, "Mephibosheth!" And he answered, "Behold, I am your servant." And David said to him, "Do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul, your father, and you shall eat at my table always."
I see this as an example of the depth and power of the soul friendship that existed between David and Jonathan. David deliberately searched for someone to whom he could show honor for the sake of his friend. He was not required to do so by the terms of his covenant but was driven by love for his friend.
Soul friendship is deep, abiding and an expression of the fear of the LORD. It is evidence of the love of the LORD, God, the Almighty's for His people in the Kingdom of Heaven in the here and now.
