Ephesians 5:13-21

But all thingsthat are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. Therefore He says: "Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light."See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.

A couple of very important “all things” to note in this passage. The first is that nothing is hidden from the Lord: my lousy moods and grumblings about others may be hidden form those around me, but not from my Lord.

The second is that we, as His people, must always be filled with the Spirit. If I am alert, He will guide me through all sorts of morasses and troubles. I will find that my soul is naturally in communion with my Lord and with the Spirit. He will keep me amply supplied with appropriate psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.

I remember my Grandpa Spence, a Godly man who always had a Psalm at the ready when speaking to his grandchildren, or would be singing a hymn quietly to himself in a high, somewhat thin tenor. The joy of the Lord lit and guided his life.
