Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.
The first line sets the stage, defines the conditions under which we work for the Kingdom of God in the here and now. Rejoicing, praying, thankful. Does that define my life? Or how about grumbling, cursing and complaining?
The first trio defines an atmosphere in witch the Spirit flourishes and prophecy abounds. It is a set of conditions where I am able to test all things to differentiate between good and evil. The latter trio restricts the Spirit, prevents prophecy and blurs the distinction between good and evil.
