He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."... I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

Peter got the central point of the Gospel and was given the keys of the Kingdom as a symbol of his correct understanding and the authority to apply and teach that understanding. Later Jesus extended that authority to all His disciples (Matt 28:18-20) and even to me. But I must stick to the point--Jesus is Lord, the Son of the living God.
