Beginning tomorrow, VT will be published under a new name, revised format, and expanded mission. That new name is The Call to Worship.

Our Universal Calling, or the story of the Philippian jailer and the home cleaner.

Acts 16:23-34 details a fascinating story of Paul and Silas’ night in a Philippian prison singing hymns and praying while the other inmates listened. No further mention of the other prisoners but the impact on the jailer and his family made history.

We have a delightful young lady who comes every other week and assists Betty with the deep cleaning of our home. A bright, cheery smile, the joy of the LORD permeates her being.

What’s the relationship between Paul & Silas and our young friend? It’s a notion that has been very important in my thoughts recently. But the answer is surprisingly simple. They, and we, are called to live out the Joy of the Lord in every aspect of our lives. And to carry that message into the world in which we have been placed.

“And how wonderful to serve the One who knows the future. If you are a follower of Christ, you don’t have live at the mercy of present problems and future fears. Instead, you can evaluate global events in terms of scriptural prophecy, world history, and the biblical agenda leading to the return of Christ.”

Think about the underlying theology of this statement! To steal from my British brothers, I don’t have to get my knickers in a twist, this is cause for joy and celebration.  THE LORD IS COMING FOR HIS OWN AND SOON. What the world reads as disaster, we read as fulfillment of prophecy.

Continuing with snippets from Where Do We Go From Here? by Dr. David Jeremiah. Taken from opening comments from Chapter 3 “A Biological Prophecy—Pandemic”, page 48:

“Like never before, we are on edge. The lockdown and quarantines seem to have done more damage than the disease. But in the midst of it all, God has been speaking to us through His timeless book. His message of comfort and courage is helping us make sense out of the turmoil. We are standing in the midst of one of life’s most defining moments. It will either make us better or make us bitter. The choice is up to us!”

Look at that last line. We, the children of the LORD, God, the Almighty are faced with many personal challenges as outlined in this book. Will we rely on our own strength and resources or turn to Him?

“And speaking of resistance, let’s remember Peter’s words in Acts 5:29, ‘We ought to obey God rather than men.’ Hopefully, we will able to continue as law-abiding citizens of our various nations, but anytime the government tries to force us to violate our biblical beliefs, we have a responsibility to speak up...”

We need to be prayer-filled and thought-filled in our responses to directives, realizing that we are the called representatives of the LORD. God, the Almighty. Our loyalty is to Him!

It is time to resume publication of Voices Together with some modifications. The major change is that the selections will be drawn from my daily readings, both from Scripture and faith-based authors. Please feel free to contribute and question.

My current reading selection includes Where Do We Go from Here: How Tomorrow’s Prophecies Foreshadow Today’s Problems by Dr. David Jeremiah. It is an analysis of 10 prophecies and their state of fulfillment. His conclusion is that our Lord’s return is imminent.

An instructive note from the book:

"One person wrote, 'What the experience of of the church under communism, and a discerning read of the signs of the times today, that all Christians of every church should start forming these cells—-not simply to deepen their spiritual lives, but to train them in active resistance.'" (I think DJ has gotten the priorities backwards. Our spiritual lives must come first.)

"Small groups are not retreats from the rest of the world. They are gatherings that help us care for one another, study the instructions of Scripture, cope with the world, and advance with the gospel. They are biblical in nature, and they will prepare to resist the socialist army that is surely coming after us."

Yes, there are many things we can do to prepare for our witness in the end times, but one of the most precious things about studies like this is that they help keep my focus on the imminent return of my Lord and Savior and off complainants that the world is going to hell in a hand basket.

Psalm 49:16-20

January 15, 2023

Be not afraid when a man becomes rich, when the glory of his house increases. For when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not go down after him. For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed --and though you get praise when you do well for yourself--his soul will go to the generation of his fathers, who will never again see light. Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish.

Lay up treasure for yourself in heaven where rust does not corrode nor moth destroy. Lord, to live and work in Your presence for all eternity. That is treasure and the ultimate 401(k).

Psalm 56:10-13

January 14, 2023

In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can man do to me? I must perform my vows to you, O God; I will render thank offerings to you. For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.

Oh, Lord, receive this as my complete statement of reliance on You and a corresponding vow of obedience. To trust You and not fear; to live according to Your Word as a life which is a thank offering to you; to walk in Your light as a soul that has been released from the grip of the Evil One: This is the Kingdom of God brought to earth!

Exodus 20:1-2,17

January 13, 2023

And God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. ... Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Those blessings of wealth and talents that you provide to me, are not for my selfish and greedy grasping, but are for me to apply to bring solace to the hurting, food to the hungry and to visit those in prison. Lord, help me to recognize opportunities to be your delivery agent and to bundle all in the message of your love and grace.

Psalm 40:1-3

January 12, 2023

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.

You have heard my cry, You are opening the eyes of my heart, You are lifting me out of the pit of destruction and setting my feet upon the Rock. There is a new song in my mouth, a song of praise and thanksgiving. And You are blessing me by using me to bring Your Blessing to many others. Praise Your holy Name!

O, taste and see that You are good. Let Your sweetness be both honey in my `mouth and repletion in my stomach. I must be 2 seconds into the dawn, and that is awesome. What will it be like when I behold You in all your Glory?

Psalm 119:4-5

January 11, 2023

You have commanded Your precepts to be kept diligently. Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping Your statutes!

Yes, Lord, I understand and accept the command: to obey You as proof of my love for You. But I cannot do this faithfully in my own strength; all I can do is plead for strength and guidance. Steadfastness must come from the Holy Spirit, and Lord, often I fail to pay attention to His gentle nudges.

Psalm 119:12-13

January 10, 2023

Blessed are You, O LORD; teach me Your statutes! With my lips I declare all the rules of Your mouth.

Lord, teach me to teach. It is one thing to simply spout your Word, but another to teach as You teach.

Lord, my plea is that my declarations might be full of grace and wisdom; that my goal will be always to bring glory and honor to Your Name, not to elevate myself; that my audience will hear and see You, not me.
