Psalm 5

September 02, 2022

Psalm 5, NKJV
To the choirmaster: for the flutes. A Psalm of David. Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my groaning. Give attention to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you do I pray.

O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who speak lies; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you. Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me. For there is no truth in their mouth; their inmost self is destruction; their throat is an open grave; they flatter with their tongue. Make them bear their guilt, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out, for they have rebelled against you.
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you. For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him with favor as with a shield.

Psalm 5, JN paraphrase
David’s instructions to the choirmaster regarding the flutes. They are to be used to express his groanings, his cries for attention, his prayers to the Almighty.

David’s day, and mine should, begin with prayer, sacrifice and watchful planning of the day in response to the LORD’s leading. He was directed, and so am I, to strip every evidence of evil from my day and responsibilities.

Easier said than done—unless I rely on the abundance of Your steadfast love. Your love lays out the path before me. It enables me to identify the lies, the suicidal, the flatterers, those whose life centers on evil rather than You. It is Your love that leads me to appropriate responses.

I need your guidance in helping/leading others to rejoice and sing for joy, to an understanding of the shield of protection over them. And to an understanding of how that shield frees them from the chains of the past.

Psalm 4

September 01, 2022

Psalm 4, NKJV
To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah

But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him. Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah

Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!” You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4, JN paraphrase
LORD of my righteousness, where are You? Why are You not answering me? Is this suddenly a reversal of our former relationship? Please hear my prayer! Has my honor been turned to shame? Have You suddenly developed a love of flattery and started to chase lies?

No! You still reserve a special relationship with those who are faithful to You and Your Word. For those who maintain a faithful relationship with You and Your Word. For those who spend their nighttime hours pondering You and Your love for us. For You, O LORD, are the One, the only One who can provide safety for me.

Your guidance to me is to offer proper sacrifices to You and put my trust solidly in You. Not those charlatans begging for some “good.” LORD, but those who put their trust in You and offer sacrifices that are sweet in Your nostrils. Than, only then will I lie down in peace and sleep.

Psalm 3

August 31, 2022

Psalm 3, NKJV
A Psalm of David, when he fled from Absalom his son. O LORD, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me; many are saying of my soul, “There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah
But you, O LORD, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head. I cried aloud to the LORD, and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah
I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around. Arise, O LORD! Save me, O my God! For you strike all my enemies on the cheek; you break the teeth of the wicked. Salvation belongs to the LORD; your blessing be on your people! Selah.

Psalm 3. JN paraphrase
I can’t begin to imagine what it would be like to flee from the wrath of a son. Let alone one who had deliberately and maliciously attempted to incite the nation against me.

But I must take David’s example before me as he recognized the hand of the LORD, God, the Almighty in providing for his well-being. What could be better than the LORD watching over me from His holy hill?

How many nights have I wasted, laying in my bed, fussing over a problem that is totally beyond my power to resolve, rather than taking David’s example. He laid down, he slept while turning that entire situation to the LORD, with a few suggestions on how he would like restitution to happen.

Psalm 1

August 30, 2022

Psalm 1, NKJV
Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Psalm 1. JN paraphrase
LORD, I have two choices; either to walk in the counsel of the ungodly or find delight in Your Law. The More I dream about living in the conjunction of Your Law and my life, the more I realize the munificence of your offer.

LORD, lead me in the Way of Your Law; lead me in the Way of Righteousness for Your Name’s sake.

Psalm 2

August 27, 2022

Psalm 2. ESV
Why are the nations restless And the peoples plotting in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers conspire together Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, “Let’s tear their shackles apart And throw their ropes away from us!” He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them. Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury, saying, “But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.” “I will announce the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have fathered You. ‘Ask it of Me, and I will certainly give the nations as Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth as Your possession .‘You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.’” Now then, you kings, use insight; Let yourselves be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with reverence And rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, that He not be angry and you perish on the way, For His wrath may be kindled quickly. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!

Psalm 2. JNV
If there is one notion that unites nations and peoples, it is the LORD, God, the Almighty and those that swear allegiance to the Trinitarian God. Why is it impossible for rulers and ruled to see that God, the Father, God, the Son, and God, the Holy Spirit unite for the good of all?

It is not surprising in the very least that the LORD, God, the Almighty laughs and scoffs. No more surprising that the LORD of the universe’s patience finally ends and He explodes in terrifying fury.” His King has been installed upon Zion, His Holy Mountain.

He has declared that His Son has inherited all; all to do with as He sees fit to break their rebellious spirit and strew as broken earthenware, as shards of useless pottery.

But, and a huge but it is. Those rebellious leaders are invited to return to the Family of God in reverence and obedience. To kiss the Son, appease His anger, and once again, take refuge in Him

Psalm 1:1-6 JKJV
There are so many opportunities to seek guidance from the wicked--the sinners; those evil ones, but true wisdom and guidance comes the Law of the LORD. Let me be one of those who meditates on Your Law day and night. This is source of true prosperity.

Mark 13:3-13

August 24, 2022

And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”

And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet.

For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains. “But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them. And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.

And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death.

This is a wonderfully encouraging passage as we watch and respond to worldwide events. Many have been fulfilled in my lifetime, or at least progress in that general direction. But I haven’t learned the central lesson yet. And that is that it is the responsibility of the Holy Spirit to take control over my tongue and mind when called to witness. And quit worrying, Johnny Boy.

He is coming and coming soon. My conviction is that it will be in my lifetime. At least His coming for me.

Mark 12:35-40

August 23, 2022

And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.”’ David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.

And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

I suspect that the great throng heard Him gladly because we (the great throng) take a perverse pleasure in seeing self-appointed authorities discomfited. The placement of this passage, immediately before the LORD’s warning against the scribes supports, I believe, that interpretation.

Mark 1:1-15

August 22, 2022

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’”

John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

The only significant difference I notice is that Jesus was ministered to by the angels during His 40 days in the wilderness in Mark, but not in Matthew. And the Matthew accounts reports the fasting, but not Mark’s.

Any observations you would care to share?

Psalm 119:145-152

August 21, 2022

Qoph With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O LORD! I will keep your statutes. I call to you; save me, that I may observe your testimonies. I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in your words. My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promise.

Hear my voice according to your steadfast love; O LORD, according to your justice give me life. They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose; they are far from your law.

But you are near, O LORD, and all your commandments are true. Long have I known from your testimonies that you have founded them forever.

All about crying to the LORD so that I may hear His voice and respond to His statutes properly and obediently. Look at that beautiful first sentence of the second paragraph. “ Hear my voice according to your steadfast love; O LORD, according to your justice give me life.” I hear pathos and pleading from Ish Elohim that the LORD, God, the Almighty would hear and respond.

So must it be with all of us who call upon the Name of the LORD.

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

This sets the Trinitarian nature of the Godhead into the concrete of the everlasting Word. It sets the definition of a disciple to be one who has been baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. No Quibbling!

I remember the LORD’s Day afternoon, a hot afternoon in July,1949, Knoxville, IL when Brother Al Larson baptized me in a shiny new stock-tank. Did I realize the importance of the Day? Probably not, but if not, why is it so clear 73 years later? The existence of the memory is a measure of its significance.

Do you remember that day? The Day of Your Baptism?

Reading

Morning Psalm 12, Noon Psalm 119:97-104, Evening Psalm 93, If you follow this regimen, you will pray through the Psalms every 47 days or just under 8 times per year.

An alternate Reading Plan is based on 7 chapters/day from 7 sections of the Scriptures. My groupings are: Genesis-Joshua, Judges to Esther, Job to Song of Solomon, Psalms breaking 119 into convenient sets, Isaiah to Malachi, Matthew to Acts, Romans to Revelation. This plan, over a several year period will result in an average reading of the entire Bible in slightly over twice per year. I've been following this plan since 1989 and still find the mixture of Scriptures presented each day to be a delightful way to end my day. The NLB app has a scheduling tool that assists greatly in keeping track of the reading list.

Or set your own reading schedule up in convenient groupings as fits your study habits. But a daily time in the Word of the LORD is an absolute.

Suggested Supplementary Reading

Our Dance With Grace, Spending the Day With God, by Rev. Gerald Skillicorn, Kindle Press. Jerry’s writing, as is characteristic with his life, bubbles over with his joy of being in the presence of the LORD, God, the Almighty.
