The Journey to Bethany

Mark through the eyes of Jesus: Mark 1.9

It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan (NKJV).

That would have been a journey taking several days. Jesus knew that John’s ministry had begun, and that multitudes were coming to be baptized and relieved of the burden of their sins. The words spoken to Him by the Father through the prophet would have been strong on His mind.

John was preparing the way for the coming of Jesus, the Messiah. Doubtless, Jesus meditated frequently on those words as He journeyed. He no doubt also heard His Father speaking to Him through all the things of creation He would have encountered on His way - trees, streams, birds and other creatures, hills and valleys, cultivated fields, bright days and star-lit nights. All of this was His handiwork. All of it subsisted by His will. All of it spoke abundantly about the new creation He would make possible by His work of reconciling the world to God. I think He must have delighted in the things that spoke to Him along the way.

Their witness would have encouraged Him then, shaped as they all were by His will and design; and I am sure that creation must have spoken to Him throughout His earthly sojourn, a constant witness to His power, purpose, and glory, a continuous groaning and longing for His reconciling and restoring work, and a portent of the new heavens and new earth over which He would one day rule in sinless glory.
