Casting and Mending

Mark through the eyes of Jesus (4)

Casting...mending.

How this sight must have delighted Jesus!

Here were men, brothers and friends, doing work which in so many ways reflected that which He Himself had come to do: casting and mending.

As He watched those nets splash gently into the sea, searching out the fish He had created for their provision, He must have seen them casting the Kingdom of God, like a great net, to gather many unto the Lord for His praise and glory.

Seeing John and James mending and preparing their nets to cast the Kingdom, He must have glimpsed the work of making disciples to which He would appoint all who followed Him.

I am sure He rejoiced at what these two situations brought to mind. He must have thrilled to call such men to follow Him, promising that they would “fish well and diligently” (Patrick) for men, even those Jesus had prepared from before the foundation of the world to follow Him, and catch them with "nets of doctrine" (Sechnall).

We are fishermen and net-menders for the Kingdom of God.
