The Peace of God

Jesus is the Prince of Peace and we are His ambassadors.

And the peace of God, which surpasses understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4.7

The peace of God is the peculiar possession of the followers of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. It is not generated within us, not the fruit either of rigorous thinking or ideal circumstances. It is the gift of God and Christ and consists in being in Christ Jesus and His Spirit being in us. This peace is an overall condition of wellbeing, confidence, courage, and joy which we cannot explain - it surpasses understanding - but which we may truly experience, and for the propagation of which we have been commissioned as ambassadors.

The peace of God guards our hearts from untoward affections and our minds from troubling and disturbing thoughts. It lodges us squarely in Jesus, exalted at the right hand of God, and keeps us from all anxiousness, fear, and doubt. It is the power of God's Spirit at work within us, willing and doing of His good pleasure (Phil. 2.13) and making us one in Christ (Eph. 2.14), Who is Himself our peace. This peace is a gift, but we must work hard to know and maintain it (Eph. 4.3), focusing on the unseen Christ and offering our prayers and thanks to Him in all things.

Jesus is the Prince of Peace and we are His ambassadors. Peace eludes the world day by day because those who do not know the Lord can only seek peace through their circumstances, relationships, and possessions, all of which can be unreliable. We have been entrusted with the message of peace - real and lasting peace - to a world at war within its soul. Our portfolio as ambassadors is to enjoy the experience of this peace - the badge of our citizenship in the Kingdom of God -  and to bear this peace to the tumultuous world around us.

To whom will we bring the peace that passes understanding today?
