Call to Worship

The Centrality of Worship

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Worship is the central Christian response to the salvation of our Lord. The apostle Paul informed the Christians in Rome that their entire lives should be an act of worship.

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God – this is your true and proper worship (Romans 12:1).

Every aspect of our lives should express gratitude and praise to God, who is redeeming us. Into worship, people bring their entire existence so that it may be gathered up in praise. From worship, Christians depart with a renewed vision of the value-patterns of God’s kingdom to glorify God in their whole life.

(Mark R. Quanstrom, The Pastor as Theological Steward)

Almighty and eternal God, our heavenly Father, you are the great king over all the earth (Psalm 47:2). We offer praise to you from the depths of our being, for dominion belongs to you, and you rule over the nations (Psalm 22:27-28 NRSV).

Your children are never out of your sight, and you answer their cries and prayers (Psalm 34:15). Your eyes “search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to” you (2 Chronicles 16:9 NLT).

Lord, we want to live our lives out of the filling and power of your Spirit. Draw us to yourself, that our hearts may be fully committed to you. May love for you and for others be the evidence of our nearness to you because you are love, and those who abide in love abide in you, and you abide in them (1 John 4:16 NRSV).

“Keep us, Lord, O keep us cleaving to thyself and still believing, till the hour of our receiving promised joys with Thee.” (Thomas Kelly)

Amen.
