ADVENT: A Promised Heir

Rusty Rabon

Isaiah 40:3 ESV
In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Genesis 15:1-6 NRSV
After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, โ€œDo not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.โ€ But Abram said, โ€œO Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?โ€ And Abram said, โ€œYou have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.โ€ But the word of the Lord came to him, โ€œThis man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.โ€ He brought him outside and said, โ€œLook toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.โ€ Then he said to him, โ€œSo shall your descendants be.โ€ And he believed the Lord; and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness.

Victor Hamilton
Godโ€™s first word to Abram is about himself. His second word is about Abram. First, there is the promise of a natural heir, and then there is the promise of legions of descendants. This is the third time Abram receives promises (12:1โ€“7; 13:14โ€“17), and it is sufficient evidence for Abram. He believes the Lord. He is willing now to stake his life on the reliability of the promises of his Lord. The Hebrew verb to believe is the source of โ€œamen.โ€ Whenever one believes, he is saying โ€œamen.โ€ Godโ€™s response to Abramโ€™s amen is to credit it to him as righteousness.[1]

Matthew Henry
Till we have evidence of our interest in Christ, we should not rest satisfied; what will all avail me, if I go Christless? If we continue instant in prayer, yet pray with humble submission to the Divine will, we shall not seek in vain. God gave Abram an express promise of a son. Christians may believe in God with respect to the common concerns of this life; but the faith by which they are justified, always has respect to the person and work of Christ. Abram believed in God as promising Christ; they believe in him as having raised him from the dead (Romans 4:24). Through faith in his blood they obtain forgiveness of sins. [2]

Westminster Shorter Catechism Question #22
How did Christ, being the Son of God, become man?
Christ, the Son of God, became man by taking to himself a true body, and a reasonable soul, being conceived by the power of the Holy Ghost, in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and born of her, yet without sin.

Merciful Lord, the comforter and teacher of your faithful people, increase in your church the desires which you have given, and confirm the hearts of those who hope in you by enabling them to understand the depth of your promises, that all of your adopted sons may even now behold, with the eyes of faith, and patiently wait for, the light which as yet you do not openly manifest; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.[3]

Of the Fatherโ€™s Love Begotten

If you have found this meditation helpful, take a moment and give thanks to God. Then share what you learned with a friend. This is how the grace of God spreads (2 Corinthians 4.15).
