In a Dry and Weary Land

Comfort and Assurance in God’s Presence

Psalm 63:1-8 NRSV
O God, you are my God, I seek you, my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So, I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So, I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands and call on your name. My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast, and my mouth praises you with joyful lips when I think of you on my bed and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

O God my Father,
Hear my prayer as I come to you now. As David found comfort in your presence when he was wandering in the wilderness of Judah, I seek comfort from your presence in my wilderness today.
I live in a dry and weary land of my own making; a land of worry and doubt, a land of struggles with my inner, sinful self; a land of failure and frustration and loss. I thirst for you and for the life you have promised but seem not to be able to find it.
As David found solace in worship, Lord, help me to find a “sanctuary” of worship in your presence.
As David found your faithful love to be “better than life” itself, Lord, help me to experience your love more fully in my life.
As David’s soul was enriched by his meditation on you, Lord, turn my mind and my heart to thoughts of you even in the midst of inner turmoil and struggle.
As David was vocal with his praise of You, Lord, fill my life with your Spirit and open my mouth to give you praise.
I cling to you, my Father. Hold me up, I pray.
Amen.
