Jesus is scourged and crowned with thorns
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. (The Nicene Creed)
Genesis 3:17-18 NKJV
Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life. Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the herb of the field.
Isaiah 53:4-5 NLT
Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed.
John 19:1-5 NLT
Then Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip. The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him. “Hail! King of the Jews!” they mocked, as they slapped him across the face. Pilate went outside again and said to the people, “I am going to bring him out to you now but understand clearly that I find him not guilty.” Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said, “Look, here is the man!”
Lord Jesus Christ, my King and my God,
I am unworthy of the great love you have shown me in suffering and dying in my place for my sin. The weight of my sin, with the weight of the sin of the world, filled the thorny crown you wore on the cross; thorns that caused blood to flow down your brow and face; blood that atoned for my sin. I merit no crown and no honor, but I pray that one day I may join the hosts of heaven who do “. . . lay their crowns before the throne and say, “You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased” (Revelation 4:10-11 NLT). Be pleased to hear my prayer, Lord Jesus. “Cleanse the thoughts of my heart by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that I may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name” (Collect for Purity).
Amen.
