Christian reversal
O God,
You have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
(Anglican Book of Common Prayer, 2019)
Acts 2:1-21 NRSV
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. ย Amazed and astonished, they asked, โAre not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear each of us, in our own native language? ย Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabsโin our own languages we hear them speaking about Godโs deeds of power.โ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, โWhat does this mean?โ But others sneered and said, โThey are filled with new wine.โ
But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, โMen of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine oโclock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
โIn the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lordโs great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.โ
It is frequently said that this passage is a reversal of the story of Babel, but it is even more remarkable than that. Judaism already constituted a reversal of Babel. The fact that God-fearing people from every corner of the earth were gathered together in one place to worship during the festival was already a reversal of that scattering and confusion. What was new, however, about the Christian reversal was that people did not need to come back to some center, but rather the word would go out to every corner of the earth. Even more significant than the languages, of course, is the gift of the Holy Spirit. At its core, Pentecost, like the incarnation itself, is about God coming to us in our fallen condition more than it is about us finally getting to God. Babel and Eden are not โundoneโ as much as they are redeemed and their negative effects nullified.[1]
Acts 10:44-48 NRSV
While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, โCan anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?โ So, he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.
Origen
If you speak Godโs word and do so faithfully with a pure conscience, it can come about that while you are speaking the fire of the Holy Spirit will inflame the hearts of your hearers and immediately make them warm and eager to carry out all you are teaching in order to implement what they have learned.
O God of peace,
Good beyond all that is good, in whom is calmness and concord: do thou make up the dissensions which divide us from one another and bring us into unity of love in thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
(Dionysius of Alexandria)

If you have found this meditation helpful, take a moment and give thanks to God. Then share what you learned with a friend. This is how the grace of God spreads (2 Corinthians 4.15).
