Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.[1]
Who is like you, O God?
Exodus 15:1-21 CSB
Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord. They said:
I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted; he has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name. He threw Pharaoh’s chariots and his army into the sea; the elite of his officers were drowned in the Red Sea. The floods covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone.
Lord, your right hand is glorious in power. Lord, your right hand shattered the enemy. You overthrew your adversaries by your great majesty. You unleashed your burning wrath; it consumed them like stubble. The water heaped up at the blast from your nostrils; the currents stood firm like a dam. The watery depths congealed in the heart of the sea.
The enemy said:
“I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil. My desire will be gratified at their expense. I will draw my sword; my hand will destroy them.” But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters. Lord, who is like you among the gods?
Who is like you, glorious in holiness, revered with praises, performing wonders? You stretched out your right hand, and the earth swallowed them. With your faithful love, you will lead the people you have redeemed; you will guide them to your holy dwelling with your strength. When the peoples hear, they will shudder; anguish will seize the inhabitants of Philistia. Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified; trembling will seize the leaders of Moab; all the inhabitants of Canaan will panic; terror and dread will fall on them. They will be as still as a stone because of your powerful arm until your people pass by, Lord, until the people whom you purchased pass by.
You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your possession; Lord, you have prepared the place for your dwelling; Lord, your hands have established the sanctuary. The Lord will reign forever and ever!
When Pharaoh’s horses with his chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought the water of the sea back over them. But the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. Then the prophetess Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women came out following her with tambourines and dancing. Miriam sang to them: Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted; he has thrown the horse and its rider into the sea. [2]
Mighty God, my heavenly Father, who, indeed, is like you? Your holy nature is glorious and majestic. You are extolled and revered in the praises of your people. You are glorious in your almighty-ness, doing great and marvelous works.
The deliverance of your people Israel from Egyptian bondage was an awesome display of your power over the Satanic gods of Egypt. In like manner, your power displayed in the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ brought to naught the power of sin, Satan, death, hell, and the grave.
The “burning wrath” you unleashed against the powers of Egyptian bondage freed your captive people, Israel. In like manner, the “burning wrath” you unleased on your only begotten Son on the cross freed us from the bondage of sin.
The schemes of Egypt’s Pharaoh were no match for you. Nor are the schemes of our “ancient foe,” the devil. As you brought your people out of slavery to “plant them on the mountain of your possession,” so through Christ you have brought us out of bondage into the glory of new life in Him.
Who is like you, O Lord? There is none like You!
We sing to you, O Lord, for you are highly exalted!
We praise you, O God, as glorious in holiness!
We extoll your Name, all-powerful Deliverer!
Hallelujah! Amen!
Westminster Confession of Faith
Chapter 8, Paragraph 4
“Of Christ the Mediator”
This office [of being our Mediator] the Lord Jesus did most willingly undertake; which that he might discharge, he was made under the law, and did perfectly fulfill it; endured most grievous torments immediately in his soul, and more painful sufferings in his body; was crucified, and died, was buried, and remained under the power of death, yet saw no corruption. On the third day he arose from the dead, with the same body in which he suffered, with which he ascended into heaven, and there sitteth at the right hand of his Father, making intercession, and shall return, to judge men and angels, at the end of the world.[3]
O God,who by the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light: Grant that we, who have been raised with him, may abide in his presence and rejoice in the hope of eternal glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.[4]
