All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name

Dale Tedder

Sunday Morning Devotion: Week 32

Introduction

Thank you for joining me today as we reflect together on one of the most beloved hymns in Christian history, All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name by Edward Perronet. This hymn has often been called “the national anthem of Christendom,” not because of its earthly patriotism, but because it rallies believers from every nation to one common allegiance, to crown Jesus Christ as Lord of all. Whether sung in a cathedral, whispered in a prison cell, or lifted in a small village church, these words unite the voices of God’s people in worship.

The hymn calls us to see Jesus not just as our personal Savior but as the exalted King of kings before whom angels bow and nations will one day kneel. In a world filled with competing loyalties and constant distractions, All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name reminds us that there’s only One who is truly worthy of our complete devotion. Today, we’ll explore how these powerful words can shape our daily walk with Christ, deepen our worship, and inspire our witness to a watching world.

Opening Prayer

Lord Jesus, we come before you today acknowledging your rightful place as King over all creation. We join with the angels who fall before your throne and the saints who have gone before us, proclaiming that you alone are worthy of all glory, honor, and praise. By your grace, you have saved us from the fall, and now we gladly crown you as Lord of our lives. Open our hearts to the majesty of your name, and strengthen our resolve to live each day in obedience to you. We pray this in the name above all names, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name
By Edward Perronet

All hail the power of Jesus’ name!
Let angels prostrate fall.
Bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all.
Bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all!

O seed of Israel’s chosen race
now ransomed from the fall,
hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all.
Hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all!

Let every tongue and every tribe
responsive to his call,
to him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all.
To him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all!

Oh, that with all the sacred throng
we at his feet may fall!
We’ll join the everlasting song
and crown him Lord of all.
We’ll join the everlasting song
and crown him Lord of all.

Key Principles from this Hymn

  1. The hymn calls every tongue and every tribe to acknowledge Christ’s reign. His lordship is not confined to one culture or generation, he is Lord of all creation, and every knee will bow before him (Philippians 2:10-11).
  2. We are reminded that we are ransomed from the fall and saved by his grace. Our “crowning” of Christ is a grateful response to his saving work, not a means of earning his favor.
  3. The final verse lifts our gaze to eternity, where with the sacred throng we will fall at his feet and sing the everlasting song. Our praise today is a rehearsal for the unending worship of Heaven.

  4. In what ways do you daily “ascribe majesty” to Christ in your thoughts, words, and actions?
  5. How does remembering your salvation by grace deepen your worship?
  6. What keeps you from consistently bowing before Christ in surrender?
  7. How might your life look different if you truly lived every moment under the reality of his kingship?

Closing Thoughts

As we have reflected on All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name, we’ve been reminded that Jesus is not just a part of our lives, he is our King, our Savior, and our eternal joy. His reign stretches across every nation and will endure through every age. Our calling is to live each day in light of his majesty, to proclaim his greatness to the world, and to worship him with all that we are.

So, let’s join with the angels, the redeemed, and the saints yet to come in singing, “Crown Him Lord of all!” May your life this week bear witness to his kingship, and may your heart overflow with the praise that one day will fill eternity.
