Amazing Grace

Dale Tedder

Sunday Morning Devotion: Week 29

Introduction

Few hymns have crossed more boundaries, comforted more hearts, or testified to God’s power than Amazing Grace. Written by John Newton, a former slave trader transformed by Christ’s mercy, this hymn speaks to every believer’s story: lost, but now found; blind, but now seeing. Its simple words hold deep theology, pointing us to the grace that saves, sustains, and secures us for eternity. Today, as we reflect on these timeless lyrics, may you rediscover God’s amazing grace at work in your own life and be inspired to praise and trust him more.

Opening Prayer

Gracious Father, how sweet the sound of your amazing grace. We come before you with humble and thankful hearts, knowing we were once lost, but now are found; once blind, but now we see. Your grace has carried us through dangers, toils, and snares, and your promises secure our hope. Speak to us now as we meditate on your mercy. Teach us to rely on your grace each day, and help us live as people transformed by your redeeming love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Amazing Grace
By John Newton (Last verse was written by an anonymous contributer)

Amazing grace (how sweet the sound)
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come:
‘tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
his word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.

Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
and mortal life shall cease:
I shall possess, within the veil,
a life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
the sun forbear to shine;
but God, who called me here below,
will be forever mine.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun,
we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
than when we’d first begun.

Key Principles from this Hymn

  1. God’s grace is utterly transformative. From lost to found, from blind to seeing, grace changes our very identity and destiny.
  2. Grace sustains us through life’s trials. God’s unmerited favor and power isn’t only the doorway to salvation but the sustaining power in every trial.
  3. Eternal hope rests in God’s promises. His grace leads us home, secures our hope, and ensures eternal joy and peace.

Questions for Discussion and Personal Reflection

  1. How does understanding yourself as a “wretch” deepen your appreciation for God’s grace?
  2. In what ways has grace transformed your life since the “hour you first believed”?
  3. What dangers, toils, and snares has God’s grace carried you through?
  4. How does God’s promise to be your “shield and portion” encourage you in difficult seasons?
  5. How can remembering that grace “leads you home” give you strength for today?
  6. What does it mean to possess “a life of joy and peace” within the veil?
  7. How can you live more aware of eternity, knowing you have “no less days to sing God’s praise”?
