Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Dale Tedder

Opening Prayer

Gracious Father, you are the Fountain of every blessing. We come to you with hearts in need of your grace, mercy, and sustaining power. Tune our hearts today, Lord, to sing your grace. Teach us to remember your faithfulness, cling to your mercy, and trust in your redeeming love. May your Spirit guide our thoughts and renew our love for you as we study your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
By Robert Robinson

Come, thou Fount of every blessing;
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above;
praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
mount of God’s unchanging love!

Here I raise my Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I’m come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor
daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace now, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;
here’s my heart; O take and seal it;
seal it for thy courts above.

Key Principles from this Hymn

  • Every mercy flows from him, and we are called to respond in praise.
  • When we were wandering, Jesus sought us, found us, and gave his life to save us.
  • Our hearts are prone to wander, but God’s grace binds us to him.

  4. When have you felt most aware of your tendency to wander from God?
  5. How does the image of Jesus seeking you while you were a stranger shape your view of his love?
  6. What does it look like, practically, to have God’s grace “bind” your heart to him?
  7. How can you daily offer your heart to God to be sealed for his courts above?

Action Steps

  1. Journal the times God has helped you and give thanks.
  2. Start or end each day by singing or meditating on a hymn or Scripture.
