Culmination of the Covenant

We’ve seen God’s covenant unfolding throughout the Old Testament. In the New Testament that covenant realizes is fullest expression. Today’s excerpt from The Joy and Rejoicing of My Heart is found on page 44:

“In the New Testament, the covenant God had entered with His people, and the Kingdom He had promised from the days of Jacob onward, come together in a single Person – our Lord Jesus Christ.

“As we have seen, Jesus represents the fulfillment of all the precious and very great promises of God. He is the King of Israel and the Lord of all lords. His Kingdom has come with power, power which is reconciling all things back to God and making all things new.

“To know Jesus Christ – to receive, embrace, trust, follow, and enjoy Him – is to know the full blessings of God’s covenant and the full power of His eternal Kingdom. In Jesus, God calls the world into His covenant and Kingdom, to know His glory and to bask in the fullness of His peace forever. Those who hear His Word and enter His covenant will know joy and rejoicing; those who refuse will be left to the consequences of their foolish choices and ways.

“Jesus is both the roadway of God’s covenant and the beginning and end of the story and structure of redemption. He is our Bridge over time into the fullness of God and His peace. He is God’s covenant; He is God’s Kingdom. Only in Jesus can we know the promise of God’s covenant, the power of His Kingdom, and the peace and joy of His presence forever.”

For reflection or discussion
1. What do we mean by saying that all the promises of God’s covenant are fully realized in Jesus?

2. How would you counsel a new believer to keep growing in those promises?

Since Jesus fulfills all the promises of God, He is what we must long for above all else—to know, love, and serve Him with all our strength and time. Jesus is Who we strain to see; Jesus is Who we long to be like in all our ways. And the Bible is the key to knowing Jesus. Share today’s podcast with a friend, then get together to discuss it.
