Our readings in this series are from the book, What in Heaven Is Jesus Doing on Earth? Jesus’ Ascension to His throne in heaven is but step 1 in His victory over all His foes. Here is a brief excerpt from pages 13 and 14:
When Jesus Christ was taken up into
the cloud, He passed through all the heavens and
emerged to shouts and trumpets in a grand
salute to His great victory, as through
the holy throng He made His way to stand
before His Father. He was crowned, and sat
down on the Father’s right. The first charge that
was given to Him was to rule the band
of angels – thousands of ten thousands at
His beck and call. Then Satan and his crew
were thrust out from the heavenly court, to do
their lying work on earth until the vat
of fire should finally receive them to
eternal misery. And though they fight
against the saints on earth, both day and night,
they are no match for Jesus. Jesus, Who
our Captain is, protects us by the might
of His indwelling Spirit, weapons of
surpassing power, and angels by His love
dispatched to guard and keep us in His sight
and care. He rules the spirits high above
and those that lurk below on earth; and we
fear nothing of their evil treachery
and malice, for we rest in Jesus’ love.
The Lord from fear of death has set us free,
that we His faithful witnesses should be.
Questions for Reflection or Discussion
- How do you envision the Ascension of our Lord? Does this make any difference in your daily walk with Him?
2. How does Jesus’ Ascension relate to our call to be His witnesses?
The writer of Hebrews defined faith in terms of hope and unseen things. The better we see the unseen things of Christ, the more our faith will grow.
