The Gift of the Spirit

Our readings in this series are from the book, What in Heaven Is Jesus Doing on Earth? I wonder if our understanding of the Spirit’s role in our lives is as clear and broad as it out to be. Here’s a reading on the matter from pages 15 and 16:

The Holy Spirit, sent by Jesus and
the Father to abide in all who trust
in Him, instructs, transforms, and comforts us,
and grants us power that we may daily stand

for Jesus as His witnesses. And just
as Jesus promised, this same Spirit is
at work within us, shaping us in His
own likeness, bearing fruit and gifting us

to build His Church and seek His Kingdom. This
is Jesus’ work as well, as by His Word
and Spirit He brings many to the Lord
our Father, and enfolds them into His

own Body. He equips us with the Sword
of truth, and sends us to the world that we
may fill it with His Presence, so that He
may all in all be – Savior, Christ, and Lord.

He opens God’s Word to us, sets us free
from sin and fear, reveals our Lord in clear
and lofty visions, and we see and hear
Him in His glory, strength, and majesty.

The Spirit seats us in the heavenly sphere,
and makes Christ’s glory known to us, that we
may glorify Him, and increasingly
be made like Him. Thus Jesus ever near

is, though He dwells in splendor, majesty,
and glory, ruling heaven, earth, and sea.

Questions for Reflection or Discussion

  1. How do you experience the work of the Holy Spirit in your life?

2. What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit? What would that filling look like in your life?

We need the Spirit to be more active and powerful in our lives, and if we’ll seek Jesus on His throne, it can be so.
