Who Is This Jesus?
(Welcome to Read Moore for Monday. I’m T. M. Moore.)
Do we know Jesus? Really know Him? Know Him as intimately and profoundly as He knows us? These are some of the questions we’ll be exploring in this series. Our readings are from the book, To Know Him. Here is a brief excerpt from pages 7 and 8:
Who is this Jesus Whom we’ll all confess
one day, and Who believers pray will bless
their supplications? Who takes center place
of all devotion, from Whose unseen face,
it is reported, glory radiates?
The Name is precious, and it resonates
with something in our soul, some truth, some hope,
some need or longing that we vainly grope
for, but that quickens every time that Name
is mentioned. Yes, we know Him, so we claim,
at least. But in what manner? By what means?
With what effects?
The word “know” intervenes
between us, we in our relentless quest
to live, discover meaning and be blessed,
get on, get by, get with it here and now,
assuming we have found our place somehow
among the myriad other unnamed specks
with whom we share existence and the next
breath, next new day; and He in His somewhere,
some other sort of time, some then and there
that we can scarcely fathom much less see,
from where, immense, impassible, and free
of all constraint save His own perfect will,
He orders every moment so to fill
the vast creation with Himself. And “know”
stands as a door between, through which we go,
or not, as He reveals Himself, extends
His hand, and bids us feast with Him, as friends
and lovers.
For reflection or discussion
1. What does it mean for you to say that the Name of Jesus is “precious”? How do others see that in you?
2. Jesus is filling “the vast creation with Himself.” How is that happening in your life? Where would you like a bit more “filling”?
Nothing is more important than growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. But for many Christians today, just being “saved” seems enough. We must wonder whether that’s enough for Jesus. In this series we’ll be considering depths of meaning to the word “know” that for too many believers remain completely unexplored.
