All these, who were chosen as gatekeepers at the thresholds, were 212. They were enrolled by genealogies in their villages. David and Samuel the seer established them in their office of trust.
Interesting upon reading the preceding passages that the offices and responsibilities being filled were after the return from exile, but had been set in place by David and Samuel. The offices were entrusted to them. This implies that they could search the records (the genealogies) to see how the responsibilities were to be met.
It's the same today in that I can search the Scriptures and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to find guidance in how I am to make disciples as I go.
