Ephesians 6:1-3

John Nunnikhoven

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”

This must have been my mother's favorite verse—I heard it so often. Then, I heard it as a child; years later I came to realize that it is a lifelong commitment. Roles and responsibilities changed, even can be regarded as switching, but to honor ones parents never changes.

It is a commandment, in the child to parent aspect that models our relationship with the LORD, God, the Almighty. It also guides us in our roles as servants to the Body of Christ.

Today's readings in the Psalms:

Morning: Psalm 69

Mid-day: 119:65-72

Evening: Psalm 145
