Exodus 20:1-2,17

John Nunnikhoven

And God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. … You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's."

Luke 12:15 And he said to them, "Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."

How much of the Kingdom of Man's efforts is poured into appealing to covetousness, building covetousness, creating covetousness, insuring that no fleeting desire goes unsatisfied? And how often do we find that those desires quickly sour and turn rancid in our souls? The latest technical whizbang that will provide unparalleled capability quickly consumes countless precious hours to get it to operate as advertised if it ever does. Teach us, Lord, to recognize covetousness before it consumes us, not after.

Today's readings in the Psalms:
