Whoever will not obey the law of your God and the law of the king, let judgment be strictly executed on him, whether for death or for banishment or for confiscation of his goods or for imprisonment."
My reaction, upon first reading of this passage, was, "Whew, glad I don't live in a theocracy" but a little reflection made me realize that almost all the laws of the United States are based on the 10 Commandments. We may not want to admit that but they are.
However, today as a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven, I face a far more serious penalty for disobedience. Loss of communion with my Father, His son and the Holy Spirit. Someday, as I stand before that Great Throne, will I hear those awful words, "I know you not." (Luke 13:23-28)
To obey is to believe, to trust, to have faith and to commit to the LORD, God, the Almighty. It is not to say the Sinner's Prayer and go on my merry way.
Today's readings in the Psalms:
