So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
The chief priests and Pharisees got it. Whether or not the Romans were going to take away their position was a moot point. But the reality was that is the people believed in Jesus, their nice, cushy status quo was on shaky ground and they adopted a "the sky is falling defense."
When someone accepts Christ as Lord and Master, the world realizes that it has lost the power to control that person and needs to adopt a defensive strategy.
