John 18:4-7

John Nunnikhoven

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, "Whom are you seeking?" They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am He." And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, "I am He,"they drew back and fell to the ground. Then He asked them again, "Whom are you seeking?"And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."

In some ways, this brief passage puts a special emphasis upon the all in all things. Judas could have pointed Him out, but to have our Lord acknowledge His identity brings His self-sacrifice to the fore. And then just to make sure we understand 2000 years later that He went as a willing sacrifice, the question and answer is repeated.
