And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
Matthew 28:18-19a And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me…Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.
The passage in Luke summarizes the span of Jesus' ministry. The passage in Matthew assigns that ministry to us, His disciples. We are to roll up our shirtsleeves and get to the task of bringing the Good News to the lost, the least, and the lonely. Every part of our assignment must have the goal of opening the Gospel to all.
It is a beautiful thing to operate a soup kitchen and feed the starving, or go on a short-term medical mission to Upper Slabbovoia, or teach adult Sunday School. However, if the tasks do not reveal the transforming power of the Cross, they will be burned as wood, hay, and stubble as we stand before the Throne of the LORD, God, the Almighty.
