Psalms 64:1-4a

John Nunnikhoven

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy. Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the throng of evildoers, who whet their tongues like swords, who aim bitter words like arrows, shooting from ambush at the blameless, shooting at him suddenly and without fear.

William Ernest Henley shook his fist at the LORD, God, the Almighty, "It matters not how strait the gate/ How charged with punishments the scroll/ I am the master of my fate/I am the captain of my soul.” (Invictus) Far, far better to follow David's example and throw myself upon God's mercy and grace.

The choice is stark: to either shout my rejection or praise Him for His love and forgiveness.

Today's readings in the Psalms:

Morning: Psalm 8

Mid-day: 119:129-136

Evening: Psalm 129
