Psalms 66:16-20

John Nunnikhoven

Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul. I cried to him with my mouth, and high praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me!

This is a powerful passage that leads me into a proper understanding of the fear of the LORD, God, the Almighty. I am called to live in a state of praise and avoidance of iniquity. Praise and obedience cannot exist in a heart that is dedicated to self-will and disobedience. Compare John 14:15  “If you love me, you will keep my commandments and Proverbs 28:9  If one turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination.

I must not expect the LORD, God, the Almighty to be a giant Santa Claus, showering me with answers to my every whim. No, the Living God is the being who created me in His image and desires only my good. I am called to obey, praise, and trust Him.
