God

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Gen. 1:1, NKJV)

The first words of the Bible introduce us to its author. “In the beginning, God…” Creation became. God already was. Before the beginning, God was. He was the author of the beginning.

From the start of His written revelation, God begins by telling us about Himself. He is wholly other, uniquely God, the only God.

“At the beginning, the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters” (Gen. 1:2). “Let Us make man in Our image (Gen. 1:26). “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (John 1:1–3).

One God in eternal, uncreated fellowship—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

This truth is the starting point of faith. “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible” (Heb. 11:3). God is the Creator who is to be recognized, worshiped, and served.

  1. In what way is God life’s point of reference?
  2. How can our salvation be expressed in terms of knowing God?
