The LORD Who Heals You

“For I am the LORD who heals you” (Exodus 15:26, NKJV)

What does it mean for God to be a healer? The answer to that question is not as straightforward as we might think. He is described as the one who takes sickness away and the one who restores health. He heals physically from bodily ailments and He heals spiritually from sin’s affliction. He heals the brokenhearted. God is not a specialist. He is a comprehensive healer.

The prerogative of God extends to more than healing, more than remedy. “Now see that I, even I, am He, and there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; nor is there any who can deliver from My hand” (Deut. 32:39).

When God declares Himself to be “the LORD who heals you” (Ex. 15:26), He is contrasting Himself with the false gods of the Egyptians from whom He has just delivered His people in the Exodus. More than that, He is establishing Himself the LORD who is healer of those who belong to Him.

Many years future our Lord Jesus entered the house of Peter where his mother-in-law lay sick. With a mere touch of His hand, she rose healed from her bed. He then cast out demons from those oppressed and healed others who were sick. And here we sample the full extent of the breadth of God’s healing.

  1. In what way is redemption expressed by healing?
  2. What in your life requires the healing hand of the living God?
