A Prayer for Unity

A great and pressing need in our day.

Psalm 133 NRSV

How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!
It is like the precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the LORD ordained his blessing, life forevermore.

Acts 4:32-35 ESV

Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.

Lord of the Church, our Savior and King,

We join you in your prayer (John 17) for unity among those who follow you; those who are called by your name.

It is deeply satisfying and spiritually fulfilling to do life together with others with whom we share a deep love for you. Harmony and unity among your disciples are an offering of worship to you and a compelling witness to the unbelievers around us.

Holy Spirit, help us to be of “one heart and soul.”

Help us never to grasp for ourselves but give us gracious and generous hearts.

May we never cling to possessions as being our own, but may we recognize that all we have is a gift from you to be used in faithful stewardship.

May our lives reflect the blessing of the Lord, the gift of life forevermore, that only comes through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.
