Approaching the Law of God

A Kingdom Catechism

We must include the Law of God in our regimen of spiritual disciplines.

Q 21: How can believers come thus to regard the Law of God?

A 21: By reading, studying, and meditating in it, hiding the Law of God in their hearts, encouraging one another in the good works it prescribes, walking in the way of love it prescribes, and teaching the Law of God as foundational to life in the Kingdom of God. (Ps. 1; Ps. 119.9-11; Col. 3.16; Eph. 2.8-10; Heb. 10.24; 1 Jn. 2.1-6; Matt. 5.17-19)

It makes sense to incorporate daily reading and meditation in God’s Law into one’s regimen of spiritual disciplines, and that for five reasons: (1) The Scriptures commend it; (2) Jesus practiced it; (3) we cannot learn love apart from the Law of God; (4) we cannot improve holiness apart from the Law of God; (5) learning and teaching the Law of God is the way to greatness in the Kingdom of God.

One might approach this task in various ways. For example, one might read a chapter from Deuteronomy every day. By so doing he would ensure the reading of a significant portion of the Law of God at least once a month. Or one might set up a schedule for reading through Genesis-Deuteronomy over the course of a year, thus gaining the advantage of an annual reading of all the Law of God. Certainly memorizing the Ten Commandments and meditating on them daily should be included in this regimen as well.
