Q 29: How do civil governments follow the Law of God?

A 29: Civil governments follow the Law of God when they seek the wisdom of God’s Law to guide their proceedings and enactments. (Ps. 33.10-12)

We take for granted the fact that many nations share certain laws in common – with respect to such matters as stealing, murder, rape, perjury, and so forth. The combination of Christianity’s influence in the world and the Law of God being written on the hearts of men explains why this is so. Men know intuitively that God’s moral directives are just and necessary for good social order. They do not always credit Him or His Law as they enact and enforce civil codes and statutes consistent with that Law, but that does not negate the provenance of all such laws in the counsel and being of God.

Therefore, Christians should not be reluctant to press for laws more in line with the thrust and direction of the Law of God. Governments which enact such laws are drawing on the wisdom of God to ensure order and wellbeing in society.
