Teachers of the Law

A Kingdom Catechism

All believers are responsible to teach God’s Law.

Q 37: Whose duty is it to teach the Law of God?

A 37: The responsibility for teaching the Law of God falls to parents, pastors, and all believers. (Deut. 6.4-9; Ps. 78.1-8; Col. 3.16; Heb. 10.24)

We may envision here a hierarchy of teaching responsibility. God has been pleased to set “offices” of instruction in His Church for the purpose of teaching the Word and equipping the saints (Eph. 4.11, 12). Such teachers have a special calling from God which must be confirmed by the larger body of believers and of their fellow teachers. With these pastors and elders other church members, who possess the gift of teaching, are enlisted to help with this important work. In Christian homes parents instruct their children to nurture them in the Lord. And all believers have a duty to teach and encourage one another in the Word which effects their sanctification. Thus, all believers must be versed in the Law of God, as well as in all the Word of the Lord, in order to fulfill their unique callings and opportunities in teaching one another and bearing witness to the Lord.
