The Promise of the First Commandment

A Kingdom Catechism

The first commandment is rich in precious promises.

Q 53: What promise does God hold out to the redeemed of the Lord in the first commandment?

A 53: In exchange for their obedience to the first commandment the Lord promises to bless His people with good, increase their ranks, bring them to righteousness, and lead them in full and abundant life. (Deut. 10.13; Deut. 6.3, 25; Lev. 18.1-5)

Those promises which attend the first commandment are possible because they are all to be known in God and Jesus Christ. By clinging to Him, practicing devotion solely to Him, and working to increase in holiness and in our stewardship of His gifts, we can expect, like Israel in the wilderness, to know the Lord’s presence with us in our journey. And, knowing His presence, we will certainly know the benefits that come from Him because these benefits are in Him, and we are in Him as long as we obey this and all the commandments of the Lord.
