The Sanction of the First Commandment

A Kingdom Catechism

There are sanctions for violating the commandments of God.

Q 54: What sanction does the Lord threaten for disobeying the first commandment?

A 54: By disobeying the first commandment the redeemed bring upon themselves the displeasure of God, the withholding of blessings, and the threat of divine judgment. (Lev. 20.22-26; Deut. 6.13-15; Deut. 17.2-7; Heb. 10.26, 27)

When we disobey the first commandment, in any of the ways previously mentioned, we cut ourselves off from God, Who is the Source of Focal Point of all blessedness. Cut off from God, we begin to drift in a world which is yet under the corruption of sin. Led by the law of sin and living in a world of sin, we can only expect to know the chastening and discipline of the Lord until such time as we return to Him and seek His blessings once again (Heb. 12.3-11).

Safety from God’s wrath is only to be found in God Himself. And we may expect to dwell in God when we obey His Law, beginning with the first commandment.
