Growth and Vigilance

A Kingdom Catechism

Growth and worship requires constant vigilance.

Q 61: How do the redeemed of the Lord follow Him in all His ways?

A 61: The redeemed follow the Lord in all His ways by laying aside every pagan practice, maintaining vigilance over their souls, and obeying all the will of God according to His Word.(Deut. 12.2-4; Deut. 12.29-31; Eph. 4.17-24; Deut. 12.29, 30; Deut. 13.12-15; Eph. 5.15-17; Deut. 13.1-4)

The Lord’s ways are not our ways, but they are the right ways (Is. 55.8, 9). Jesus taught and embodied the ways of God, and He calls us to follow Him (1 Jn. 2:1-6). In order to follow Jesus we must renounce our own ways and “be clothed” with the Lord Jesus and His ways (Eph. 4.17-24). Moreover, given the ease with which pagan ways leach into our everyday lives, we must maintain constant vigilance over our souls, searching the Scriptures and resting in His Spirit to enable us to fulfill what the Lord requires of us. The second commandment calls us to a life of active growth and vigilance, lest, in our everyday worship as much as in our communal worship, we open the door to pagan ways, and forfeit the blessing that comes from honoring God in our worship and our lives.
