Q 62: What promise does God hold out for His people in the second commandment?
A 62: In exchange for their obedience to the second commandment God promises to show His steadfast love to His people, to account them blameless before Him, and to keep them and their communities free of abominable wickedness. (Ex. 20.6; Deut. 5.10; Deut. 18.9-13; Deut. 13.11)
All the blessings God’s people could ever desire come to them through the vehicle of worship. God promises that devotion to Him, according to His ways, will result in blessings more than we could ever possibly consume.
But the realization of those blessings is contingent upon faithfulness in worship. When we seek God in worship, He bestows His blessings in abundance. If we seek our blessings through worship, we corrupt the practice of worship and, in spite of any temporary sense of wellbeing, we forfeit the larger blessings God holds in store for us.
